Chalk Paint 101 - How To Get That Vintage Look
Does pastel remind you of the 50s? This vintage look can be achieved with chalk paint. You can paint your old (or new) furniture with chalk paint to get this look… do it yourself.
Chalk paint is different from other paint because it contains plaster (because of the plaster it will stick to almost any furniture, and you don’t need to do layering the way you do with other paints).
You can either make your own plaster paint by adding plaster (a small amount — 5 tbsp Plaster of Paris to 2 tbsp water and 2 cups indoor paint) to regular paint or you can buy it already made.
The plaster tones the brightness and shinyness down, making the completed paint job mattish, and also, to some eyes, “antique.” You get a look with plaster paints that you don’t get from other paints, that’s for sure.
To seal this paint, use a wax after the chalk paint has dried. Apply the wax with a rag.
Save Your Citrus Trees With White Paint
Saplings and very young trees are susceptible to damage in ways older, bigger trees are not vulnerable to. An old-time method of dealing with this is shielding trees behind a layer of white paint.
Insect damage to trees, sunscald, cracked, damaged bark on the young saplings and trees can all be minimized with white paint.
Orchards do this, and so do tree farms. The main purpose isn’t insects; it’s preventing the cracking and splitting that can happen to tender new bark.
Once that bark is split, then disease, insects and fungus can get in.
What it does for insects is show where the infestations are more easily. Insects show up better against a white surface than bark. Some borers are also inhibited from making their home in the white trees. I could also imagine birds and other predators could more easily see insects walking over white bark and find them easier meals.
Painting with white is controversial, however, especially if the wrong paint is used, because it can harm a tree.
So what to use? Water-based latex paint, diluted at one gallon of latex mixed with 4-5 quarts of water. However, more latex is better against borers and thirds of the two listed ingredients plus joint compound is reported to be good against sunscald.

How dwellings like this get classes as RVs and not homes is that they come in under 10,000 pounds (but not $10,000 dollars, unfortunately).
Park model RVs are built for people who want more space than a tiny home, but this one seems to have a good layout for space, but is small in size (400 square feet).
It’s called “The Escape Cabin,” and it is classed as an RV. You can move it around — it has wheels — and soon will be available to everyone (who has $80,000).
It looks like it does partly because it was designed not as an RV but as a cottage, and is finished with high quality cottage fixings. It has R48 celiings, R40 floors and R28 walls.
The bedroom allows for a king-size bed and the bathroom has a full-sized bathtub. Not bad for a tiny home. Some tiny homes and tiny cottages have only little cubicles in them, especially the mobile kind. It has a fridge and stove and a high-efficiency fireplace.
And, like most small homes, it takes relatively little power to heat it (or cool it).
Burning Man, the one of a kind festival partaken in by thousands every year, may be moving. Either that, or it will become more expensive. This due to a new tax implemented in Nevada state, the traditional home of the desert festival.
Burning Man CEO Marian Goodell recently made comments suggesting that the festival may move to Utah due to Nevada state attempting to place the recently created tax on tickets.
“The biggest danger facing Burning Man right now is that the State of Nevada has levied an entertainment tax,” Goodell said, adding that “We still believe that we don’t fit under a form of entertainment. Frankly, we’re not a Las Vegas show. We’re not a car race or a concert in a stadium. We’re not able to absorb that. That’s the thing right now that makes us look longingly towards Utah or any other state that might not have levied that.”
Burning Man is not the only festival that may be subject to new taxation. Electric Daisy Carnival and other big events have also said they may have to leave, because the tax would cause them to operate at a loss.
If the tax is applied to Burning Man, it will cost the organizers an additional $2.8 million, which will be passed on to ticket buyer who will pay an additional 9 percent.
“We certainly understand the Nevada Legislature’s need to identify revenue sources, but we believe this change to the Live Entertainment Tax is misguided,” said Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham.
The new tax is estimated to cost the organizers $2.8 million dollars, and raise the ticket price of the event by 9%.
Jim Graham, a spokesman for the festival, pointed out that Burning Man attendees already bring millions of dollars into the state’s economy and pay a significant amount of taxes purchasing gas, airplane tickets, food, and hotels while traveling to the event.
“Burning Man is a non-profit organization that spends more than $11m in Nevada, has vendor contracts with local businesses and is a strong supporter of arts around the state… Burning Man participants contribute more than $40m annually to the Nevada economy – they pay their fair share of sales and gas taxes, and they are tremendously supportive of local businesses.”
If the festival does move, it will not be the first, but it will be the first in a long time. Burning Man has been held in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada since 1986 when it moved from Baker Beach, San Francisco.
Cornhole sets are fairly expensive to buy in stores, right? And it’s just wood and beanbags. But actually, wood is expensive, and the product has significant size and weight. It’s not like it’s made out of plastic or something. However, you can cut costs by making your own.

This is a sanctioned sport. There is an organization called the American Cornhole Association, and they require platforms to be 48 inches by 24 inches and made fro 1/2 inch plywood. The heigh must be 2 and a half to 4 inches and the back must be raised 12 inches from the ground. The bags must be 6 inches square and constructed of duck canvas filled with corn feed. Ten years after the launch of the extraordinarily successful Suzuki Hayabusa, the man responsible has finally spoken about its controversial appearance.
Koji Yoshiura spoke exclusively to MCN about creating the original 1999 machine, which gained an instant cult following as well as outraging politicians with its near-200 mph capability.
Koji Yoshiura said: “The mission was to create a total new styling that will not be out of date within few years, and a styling that will be the ‘Face’ of Suzuki.
“‘Fastest production motorcycle’ was never a concept nor a target of this bike (at the beginning of the project, the Hayabusa was not 1300cc but 900cc – 1100cc, which was the main market in those days).
“As a consequence of, pursuing the best handling, acceleration, safety, power, riding ability, original styling, etc., for the good of the customers, it became the ‘Fastest production motorcycle’.”
The bike, famous for its speed, was not intended to be the fastest. The speed of the bike was just what happened in the design when the motorcycle designer pursued better performance in other areas.
“My aim was to create a somewhat grotesque design and create a strong initial impact,” stated Yoshiura.
“By doing this, once the model was out in the market and the performance of it have been proven, I thought that people will start to show interest to the weird design, and then the design would be caked in peoples mind.”
And from comments, not everyone does like this bike. Some do think it is ugly. But the look is distinctive and the speed was an empirical record for bikes of the time.
Yes, Lambo has a bike design for 2015 that is all swirling angles, and it kind of reminds us of the angles of so many famous Lambs from the last several decades.
This is a 1000cc inline 4-cylinder 2015 Lamborghini motorcycle (was anyone expecting a V12?). This machine was manufactured by Chak Motors Company (a Russian company), and the lines… the style… have been described by some as “aggressive.” This is a pretty uniquely styled motorbike. The bike is called “Molot.” It’s made out of a Honda ABS CBR 1000 and the Lamborghini is the covering.
According to Chak Motors, the motorbike is “heavily modified.” It’s nice for the bike, maybe, that Russians are using a trusted auto maker’s parts (such as Japan’s Honda, which places quite a bit of emphasis on quality machinery).
Maybe that’s why Chak company says on their website that, “Molot is the safest super bike on the road today, not to mention the first Russian super bike that is designed and hand built in St.Petersburg, Russia.” However, even the most impressive of motorcycles can find themselves in an accident and might need to help of a lawyer who might be able to help their case.
The Chak bike team did do an impressive design job, though, and credit is justly, it seems, earned for putting out a motorbike that has an appearance that so many have been interested in. A bike with such an interesting appearance needs an equally interesting helmet to go with it. Have a look at something like the Bell Qualifier DLX helmet to see if satisfies the needs of motorbike riders.
So let’s look at the design statement on the bike (for features, Chak says its a safe bike because of its LED lighting, predictive PEBS breaking, computer, automatic throttle disabling feature, and some other technological featuers):
“Molot which Translates from Russian as a sledge or a mallet type hammer, is an aggressive, tough and technologically advanced 1000cc super bike.
“Molot is basically a heavily modified 2013 Honda CBR 1000RR ABS version, we believe this is the best motorcycle on the market today, it’s construction design has allowed us to completely strip everything down to the frame, engine and the wheels. The frame itself has been modified to give the motorcycle more of a lighter look. Although, the rear cowl looks very light and fragile it is actually very strong. We have used aluminum and composites to make it support up to 440 pounds. The design itself is very aggressive and aerodynamic. Every line and indent has been made to serve a purpose. Top of the bike where the handle bars are, has been completely covered, all of the hose and break lines are now stored inside. This way more parts are hidden away from things like weather and the rider.”
