What Is The Ultimate Mixtape?

Anyone who is old enough to have ever had one of these knows how great mixtapes are and how nice it was to receive one from someone.

Mixtapes were 60 or 90 minutes long, and a person couldn’t just drag and drop a bunch of files into a flash drive folder, or, dating back another level, drop a bunch of files into a cd folder and burn the cd.

A person had to have a tapedeck that had two decks. They had to cue up each song and hit record and play at the same time, then wait and listen to the whole song and stop it at the exact moment, then run the mixtape a bit to leave the appropriate amount of space. They had to plan out the end of the tape especially: either you would have a bunch of empty space at the end of each side of the tape or you would have a song cut off part way. Or a short song would get a chance to be on a mixtape.

A mixtape was also a gift. You gave them to boyfriends and girlfriends, to friends, to family members. They had all your favorite songs or all you though the recipient would like. And when you got one, you had to listen to every song. If they put a song on there you didn’t like, you either had to listen to it or go to your tape deck and fast forward it to the next song and try to find the next song.

They’d also be given when someone was turning someone else onto a new style of music or a new band or something.

What was the best mixtape you ever received? If you have a photo, post that photo. If we get enough, we’ll make a picture gallery of them all. Mixtape_love_blog140212

Super Cool VW Van Tent

VW Vanatics, this tent might interest you.

It’s looks like a VW van parked in a grassy field surrounded by trees, a nice camping location, but RVers, there is no V in this RV.

This tent is made in the exact same dimensions as the VW van, but it has less of an engine even than the original!

Would it be fun to camp in this, though?

ScreenHunter_6061 Aug. 26 17.42

It’s licensed to Volkswagen.

Reportedly, the VW Camper tent is not difficult to set up. It sleeps 4 adults in its two rooms. A zipper partition divides the two rooms inside the tent.

You can get this RV tent in 3 colors: orange, blue or red. It comes with poles and bungee cords to set it up with.

ScreenHunter_6060 Aug. 26 17.42

You can stand up in it — its just a little taller than the inside of a VW Van would be because you stand on the ground rather than the van floor, and its 10 feet long.

You can actually buy these tents on Amazon. Click here to see it on Amazon online.

You can also get them for kids — just small play tents — for around $60.00. Click here for the kids tent.

Angels Breathe…

Most of us believe in angels. And yet, most of us have never been present with one. The majority of people would describe them as those we have seen on the television or pictures from a religious book. And the description is typical; dress in a white robe with feather-like wings embedded in their back. Their aura is angelica and pure.  According to some dictionaries an angel is a cosmic being who is a mentor between heaven and earth.

There are moments in our lives when we were presence with an angel. Could it be possible we just were unaware? There are people who do not wear feather-like wings embedded in their back. And even though there is no halo, and we never hear a harp being played; they are still angels.

I know the majority of people like me feel their life at times is like a roller-coaster. You have up and down days; good and bad times. It is life. Then there are those days somehow we manage to be present with people who are there for us. Those people who regular appear on a daily basis to help others; doctors, nurses, firemen, police officers. Although it may be their job, they respond with kindness to us.

And then there are those who do not earn monies to appear when we need them; mom and dad, spouse and friends because they love us.   I have found sometimes amidst where I am, there will be a person who is giving a helping-hand to a stranger.

I have often thought that there are a lot of angels. Perchance we all at times have been thought of as an angel from someone who needed us. I believe there are angels here on earth…and they breathe just like you and I.

Division!!!

All of us look for a place we can live our lives in some kind of peace. Most of us have   some idea what that looks like. Peace is defined by the dictionary; harmony, armistice, tranquility, calm, serenity…end of war. I have heard the term “unity” used in the sense of the world coming together therefor; peace would exist.

And yet, on the news I listen to how the immigrants are coming from different parts of the world invading countries. The majority of the immigrants are coming from a country where they as citizens have no meaning to the authorities. Some of the countries view the citizens as no more than garbage. This includes the women and children as well. These citizens live every day in fear for living and/or lack of resources to survive; not enough of the necessities of life. The media display across the television so all view pregnant woman, babies, they are fighting to find a place of peace.

There is an apprehension from countries that are being raided with immigrants. The apprehension is overwhelming because thousands of immigrants will need resources to survive. The resources the immigrants need are to be paid by the citizens of the country they raided; through their taxes, in order for the immigrants to find their place of peace.   These countries are noted for their way of life, where democracy exists. Everyone wants to survive…preferably in peace.

Life’s Movie Reel!

There are times when I feel as though my life is on one of those old-time movie reels, and I am not talking about the film that comes from still cameras. No,
what I am talking about is further back. The time would be the 1890’s, “The Silent” movies. Although in the 1960’s, I can remember watching films of my family, that my father had taken.

I often wonder if our lives are set in stone, the fate of one’s life has already been decided or pre-ordained; like a movie. You can edit a movie reel. Perhaps we can edit our lives as well. Maybe the universe has a way of guiding us to a certain point in a direction that is more suitable for us. And yet, we do have choices on how we respond. Wouldn’t that be editing one’s life?

When I think about my life and how it unfolded; it does seem that each step brought me forth to another destiny. I am sure all of us have thought back on our lives and contemplated; “if only”…”if only I had chosen this”…“if only I had not chosen that, my life might have been….” I have thought if I could have edited my movie reel, cutting out some of my choices then my life would have been better.

The real question one should ask when editing the movie reel of life; “what kind of person would you be?” Would I be happier than I am now? Would my perception of life be better or worse or would I feel as though my life is a movie reel, still needing to be edited?

Even if our lives are set in stone we make choices on how we choose to edit our lives. Everything we are, at any given moment is a segment of the film from our past; what we choose to do with that moment is our choice. This moment of my movie reel…I choose to embrace my life.

Retro Video Game System Is Coming, And It’s Going To Bring Cartridges Back With It!

Today when we look at video games we tend to think of the more convenient ways to play, like massive online multiplayer games, purchasing downloadable content, and playing the most hip and trendy mobile phone games. While gaming has clearly changed in just these last couple decades, there is no denying the impact of what came before this current generation.

When you have a conversation with a person who has been a gamer since the late 1980’s or early 1990’s, you would know just how passionate that gamer was of how it was to just sit back and play a game. No futuristic virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift were required and nor were Android microconsoles like the recent failure Ouya even included in conversations. If anything, these were the times when you had a tremendous library of video games to choose from and there were very little to no strings attached.

Take the above stories as examples of a possible revisiting of that past gaming generation. The name of this proposed console is simple. It is called the Retro Video Game System and it might look familiar to gamers who have been around for a while. That is because the Retro VS gets its inspiration from the official console mold of the Atari Jaguar. Unlike the Atari Jaguar, however, this won’t be a console that stays in the past as you will be able to use various USB devices, controllers, keyboards, mouse devices and so on. The Retro VGS is intended to act as a bridge between Old School and New School gaming in some aspects.

The main selling point of the Retro VGS is the fact that it allows gamers to return to acquiring game cartridges, which hasn’t been in style since the days of the Nintendo 64. Ever since that generation, mainstream gaming has exclusively involved using CD/DVD discs for retail. Another interesting note about Retro VGS, which will launch its official Kickstarter campaign on the week of September 14, 2015, is that it saved almost $500,000 in initial start-up costs because of its acquisition of the Atari Jaguar tooling, including the console design and the cartridges.

In other news, while this is only in the speculation stage, it is interesting to receive reports that Nintendo is possibly thinking about dropping discs and going back to making games for cartridges. It has been common  knowledge throughout the gaming industry that Nintendo plans to move forward in making a new console, seeing that the Wii U hasn’t exactly been the success that they envisioned it to be. We have been given hints as to what the Nintendo NX, the tentative name of the new console, will bring as far as gaming content is concerned, and we may start getting hints as to the direction the company is headed towards. This new console is said to be backwards compatible, as in there is potential for it to play games that have been featured on past consoles.

Reading between the lines of this possible new approach by Nintendo, if they were to drop optical drive discs in favor of cartridges, it would appear that this would be a move to save money while getting reacquainted with a past practice that helped them generate money in the first place. No official word has been issued by Nintendo regarding this rumor, but this is something for gamers to keep an eye on if they are going to make a key decision as to which console they wish to buy in the next gaming generation.

Is Nintendo dropping discs?

Can You Name These Cars From The 80s (and 70s)?

cars from the 80s

I actually can’t. Quite simply.

And there are a couple of these that no one has been able to get. Can you name the as-yet-unidentified #13?

How about number 16? A lot of people might be able to get some of the hit TV show vehicles. Still not sure if I should give them away. The answers ARE on this page, but hidden. Don’t peek until you’ve guessed. Can you identify which car was on the A-Team van, Ghostbusters, Knight Rider, Herbie the Love Bug, Back To The Future, Magnum P.I., Dukes of Hazzard, and Batman? And can you guess which one was Mad Max’s ride or what show that big semi tractor was from?

If anyone can name them all, you get the prize of master of 70s/80s car trivia on Blogunity.

It’s good for 1 year, upon which time you have to come back and renew your title by posting the answer to the following equation: 5 X 5 = ?

UPDATE to this post. I see you guys I.D.-ing these vehicles on the Facebook post. Can anyone name the models of the cars? That would be pretty impressive vehicle knowledge. No one’s got them all though, it looks like. That’s so crazy. How can we have tv shows only a few decades old and no one remembers the vehicles anymore? For now, I don’t want to spoil the fun for anyone yet, but afterwards I’ll make sure to mention all those who got them right and those who deserve honorable mentions (for humor, sportsmanship, and trying hard as well).

How Many General Lee Dodge Chargers Were Used During “Dukes of Hazard”?

General Lee Dodge Chargers

General Lee lasted several seasons, that 1969 Dodge Charger in solid orange with the (now endangered) Confederate Flag on top and the number 01 on the side doors that did not open. Actually, Warner Brothers recently decided to stop making General Lee toy cars with the Confederate Flag.

The General Lee made a lot of jumps. An almost unbelievable amount for a single Dodge Charger.

But actually, believe it or not, there were more than one General Lee cars. Most of the Chargers were totalled.

Can you guess how many?

220 were simply destroyed by the TV series. But when the show was cancelled it left 18 gathering dust on the set. They sold 17 to private collectors in 1991.

Chalk Paint 101 - How To Get That Vintage Look

Does pastel remind you of the 50s? This vintage look can be achieved with chalk paint. You can paint your old (or new) furniture with chalk paint to get this look… do it yourself.

Chalk paint is different from other paint because it contains plaster (because of the plaster it will stick to almost any furniture, and you don’t need to do layering the way you do with other paints).

You can either make your own plaster paint by adding plaster (a small amount — 5 tbsp Plaster of Paris to 2 tbsp water and 2 cups indoor paint) to regular paint or you can buy it already made.

The plaster tones the brightness and shinyness down, making the completed paint job mattish, and also, to some eyes, “antique.” You get a look with plaster paints that you don’t get from other paints, that’s for sure.

To seal this paint, use a wax after the chalk paint has dried. Apply the wax with a rag.

Save Your Citrus Trees With White Paint

Saplings and very young trees are susceptible to damage in ways older, bigger trees are not vulnerable to. An old-time method of dealing with this is shielding trees behind a layer of white paint.

Insect damage to trees, sunscald, cracked, damaged bark on the young saplings and trees can all be minimized with white paint.

Orchards do this, and so do tree farms. The main purpose isn’t insects; it’s preventing the cracking and splitting that can happen to tender new bark.

Once that bark is split, then disease, insects and fungus can get in.

What it does for insects is show where the infestations are more easily. Insects show up better against a white surface than bark. Some borers are also inhibited from making their home in the white trees. I could also imagine birds and other predators could more easily see insects walking over white bark and find them easier meals.

Painting with white is controversial, however, especially if the wrong paint is used, because it can harm a tree.

So what to use? Water-based latex paint, diluted at one gallon of latex mixed with 4-5 quarts of water. However, more latex is better against borers and thirds of the two listed ingredients plus joint compound is reported to be good against sunscald.
