Enchanting, Radical, Controversial RV Body Design

The enchanting, radical and often controversial body of work by the legendary Swiss-Italian designer Luigi Colani, is an industrial designer and the one famous for a certain round windshielded silver RV commonly cited as “the most expensive” RV (we have it on Blogunity, too).

Mr Colini is a very old designer. He was born in 1928. He’s been in the public eye for some of his unconventional designs, including aerodynamic trucks. He’s known to designers and the public alike for these designs. Colini has also received design awards over his career, but he’s mostly a design outsider because he takes an unconventional approach, it is said.

It was in the early 70s that Colini developed his first streamlined truck design, which he said, “was a direct response to the world oil crisis yet nobody noticed my design. They didn’t get the message.” Colini again designed streamlined trucks later in the decade.

In the 80s, too, Colini’s designs reflected his interest in fuel economy. The trucks and aircraft, ships and cars Colini designed and studied were exhibited worldwide.

Colini set a record in 1981 for fuel economy for his 4-seater 2CV.
