Splenda Goes from ‘Safe’ to ‘Caution’ after Leukemia Found in Mice

Splenda is synthetic sweetener that is used as a replacement for sugar. Some people are using this to sweeten their beverages, but scientists have found out that it has to be taken with caution as the result of a new study that showed that a group of mice fed with Splenda became host to leukemia.

The group of food safety advocacy has reduced the value for sucralose. This artificial sweetener is known as Splenda. It’s label was changed from ‘safe’ to ‘caution’ in the substance guide for food condiments. A non-profitmaking watchdog group, The Center for Science, declared they were dropping the safety score of sucralose. This simply means that this food additive is risky and may cause harm to consumers.

A study was conducted in a self-regulating Italian research laboratory that showed that when mice were regularly fed with Splenda, they developed Leukemia. The evidences of the conducted studies warned consumers to avoid using Splenda. This warning moved the FDA to modify the safety score. In 2002, a study also showed that Splenda impaired the DNA of mice. It was because of this result that they discourage the use of Splenda because DNA impairment may bring cancer issues.

Another study in 2008 was done by researchers. They found out that Splenda had a tendency to kill useful bacteria in the digestive tract. These bacteria are helpful in the digestive system and they fight any invaders that enter the gastrointestinal tract. If these useful bacteria are killed, several disorders like annoying bowel syndrome can be experienced.

With the warnings posed by researchers, it is better to avoid the use of Splenda and switch to a healthier diet. Both sugar and artificial sweeteners are not good for your health. CSPI is encouraging people to switch to water, fruit juice or tea. When this public information was announced, Johnson and Johnson, which promotes Splenda, publicized a statement that there around 110 research and studies conducted in over twenty years and it has been indicated that sucralose is safe.
