A crochet market bag? Most people seem to be trying to cut down on using plastic bags (in some places in Europe, they’ve actually made plastic bags illegal in some stores), and we’re using more cloth bags. Some people forget them every time and have to buy more, some people always have some stuffed in their purse, but crocheters now have a new option: make a crochet project of their market bag.
That’s what Michelle at My Poppet did. Look at that crochet bag up top. It has a tighter crochet for the bottom to keep everything in and secure, but a looser crochet for the sides, so that you can see in, for lightness, for stretch, and whatever other reasons. Then a nice handle. And the colors can be your own.
Crochet materials for this project:
• 2.5 balls kitchen string for the bag body
• 1 x 50g ball 8ply/DK cotton in contrast colour for the base and handles
• 4.5 mm hook
• Open Stitch marker
Stitches used (quite a few on this particular project, and you might expect it to be so — it comes from a talented crocheter):
slip, chain, single, double, and back loop only
First you crochet the base, going around your starting point and crocheting rows of border. You’ll have what looks like a short long bowl at the end of this. Then you create the bag body, and the top border of this with a tighter crochet again. The strap is crocheted much the same way the top border is done.
