People are meeting their friends, business associates and other contacts online more and more today. It’s not just people they knew before they came online. Even around 5 percent of Americans in a marriage or committed relationship MET their significant other online. That means they weren’t friends before, but through online social media or other online means, they met someone they ended up in a serious relationship with. And 23 percent of the people who meet online get married.
Yes, things have changed since 1995, when only 14 percent of American adults were internet users, to say nothing of the low percentages of people in other countries. Internet users in Asia, for example, amount to as many people as North America, Europe, Australia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East combined.
Now, 59 percent of Americans polled think online dating is a good way to meet people, according to Pew research. That percentage is steadily growing, while the percentage of people who think those who use online dating sites are desperate is shrinking. Twenty-two percent of American adults age 25-24 have used online dating sites or apps.
It’s hard to find statistics for how many people work online nowadays. Who doesn’t know someone who works online, though, or at least makes some of their income from online sources.
Online is also how many people do research, study, learn about and compare their political candidates, find jobs, register for school, do banking, trade stocks, find medical information and consult doctors, read news, and share the things they find interesting,
Recognizing that people don’t just carry on their real-world contacts on Social Media, but actually use Social Media just like other ways to meet people, we have created this list to make it possible for even those who have few online social contacts to start to make some friends, find people with common interests, network, or do whatever else you use Social Media for.
